LACROIX Group, one of the leading international manufacturers of embedded and industrial internet of things (IIoT) systems, including smart infrastructure and industrial components, shut down three of its production sites after they experienced a ransomware attack. The shutdown occured at the Beaupréau site in France, Willich in Germany, and Zriba in Tunisia, which produce electronic systems and equipment for aerospace and automotive industries, energy, and water infrastructure solutions. The company said that it experienced a targeted attack that struck the sites on May 12th, and while it did not majorly impact the company’s business, it forced its IT systems to stop its operations. The three factories will remain closed for the week, and the company anticipates resuming production by May 22nd.

Despite the current situation, Lacroix Group reports that it has partially implemented measures to continue production and recovery plans for the sites. Moreover, the cyberattack is not expected to significantly affect the company’s future performance since the three plants accounted for 19% of the total sales last year, and the French and German sites would have been closed on the usual national holiday of Ascension Day on Thursday and Friday. Nevertheless, it highlights the gravity of the current internet security threat to the manufacturing industry.

The manufacturing industry had experienced unprecedented growth in recent times due to technological advancements. However, it has also become a prime target for cybercriminals due to their vast infrastructure, complex supply chains, and heavy reliance on technology. Cyberattacks targeted at critical infrastructure have increased by 500% in the last two years are becoming more frequent during the pandemic. As companies operate remotely, opening security vulnerabilities through new technologies integrated without proper procedures and protocols.

To prevent similar cybersecurity incidents, manufacturers should implement secure information systems, such as data protection and encryption protocols that specifically cater to the company’s needs. Companies need to educate their employees, suppliers, and customers on best security practices and establish a security culture in the organization. They should also consider cybersecurity insurance policies to help with the recovery of assets in case they are compromised.

This event further underlines the need for infrastructure security to be prioritized and highlights the significant telecommute trend used by cyber criminals. Manufacturers should continuously monitor their network security and improve their security posture by conducting regular penetration testing, implementing incident management and response systems, and keeping their technology updated. Additionally, investments must be made in duplicating backups of critical data and the systems to enhance speedy recovery.

In conclusion, this attack highlights the need for a more comprehensive and effective defense system and continuous monitoring of infrastructure security in the manufacturing sector. Cybersecurity experts must also constantly research and develop new strategies to better protect companies from cybersecurity threats.
