OpenAI Launches $1 Million Cybersecurity Grant Program

As makers of the ChatGPT bot application, OpenAI plans to distribute grants of US$10,000 for projects that enable defensive use-cases for generative AI technology, in the form of API credits or direct funding. The company aims to work with defenders globally to apply AI and enhance like-minded individuals working for collective safety. OpenAI aims to nudge developers to create innovative AI capabilities and develop methods to quantify the cybersecurity capabilities of AI models.

Cybersecurity Focused Research and Development

OpenAI said that its program aims to encourage developers to create cutting-edge AI capabilities that will help defenders. They aim to develop methods for quantifying the cybersecurity capabilities of AI models. They include collecting and labelling cyber defenders’ data to train defensive cybersecurity agents; detect and mitigate social engineering tactics and automate incident triage, and identify security issues in source code. The grant program also aims to fund projects relating to network and device forensics, automatically patching vulnerabilities, and optimizing patch management processes to improve prioritization, scheduling and deployment of security updates.

Will Not Consider Offensive-Security Projects Currently

OpenAI notes that offensive-security projects will not be considered for funding at this time. All submissions should be intended to be licensed or distributed to maximize public benefit and sharing.
