Sumsub Launches Enhanced Deepfake Detection Technology to Combat Identity Fraud

Miami, June 22, 2023 – Sumsub, a global verification platform specializing in customizable Know Your Customer (KYC), Know Your Business (KYB), transaction monitoring, and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) solutions, has announced the launch of its enhanced deepfake detection technology. In response to the growing threat of identity fraud, Sumsub has updated its facial biometrics tool, which is an integral part of the KYC process for businesses. The deepfake fraud detector has been integrated into Sumsub’s liveness solution and enhanced to align with the latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

A Pervasive Threat

According to Sumsub’s reports, the number of deepfakes detected in the first quarter of 2023 has already exceeded the total number detected throughout the entirety of 2022. This highlights the urgency of addressing this rapidly evolving type of fraud. Deepfakes, which are realistic synthetic media generated using AI, pose a significant threat to digital platforms, individuals, and communities.

Staying Ahead of the Game

Vyacheslav Zholudev, co-founder and CTO of Sumsub, emphasized the company’s commitment to combating advanced malicious technologies and protecting digital platforms. He stated, “As an anti-fraud provider, Sumsub strives to stay ahead of the game. We continuously develop innovative fraud detection solutions to combat the advancing technologies used by fraudsters. Our new advanced deepfake detector reinforces our core KYC product and commitment to enhancing AI-driven technologies.”

The Significance of Liveness Technology

Sumsub’s proprietary liveness technology plays a crucial role in detecting deepfake attempts and authenticating real users within seconds. The system ensures that users are physically present by creating a 3D FaceMap, which is continuously referenced for authorizing future actions such as transactions and logins. In a world where businesses operate online and are vulnerable to identity fraud, this technology brings an added layer of security.

Global Deepfake Fraud Trends

Businesses operating in fintech, payments, cryptocurrency, and gambling sectors face a high risk of deepfake fraud. Spain led the pack in 2022, accounting for 49.7% of all global deepfake fraud cases. Great Britain followed closely at 9.3%, and the United States made up 4.2%. However, in the first quarter of 2023, Great Britain and Spain produced the highest number of deepfake fraud cases, with 11.8% and 11.2% respectively. Germany (6.7%) and the Netherlands (4.7%) also had noticeable figures. The United States ranked fifth, representing 4.3% of global deepfake fraud cases.

Furthermore, the proportion of deepfakes among all fraud types saw a significant increase in several countries. From 2022 to the first quarter of 2023, deepfakes among all fraud types increased by 4,500% in Canada, 1,200% in the United States, 407% in Germany, and 392% in the United Kingdom. Other countries, such as Australia (5.3%), Argentina (5.1%), and China (4.9%), also experienced a high proportion of deepfake-related fraud cases.

Addressing the Broader Synthetic Fraud Landscape

Pavel Goldman-Kalaydin, Head of AI/ML at Sumsub, highlighted the need for continued vigilance in the face of evolving AI technologies and sophisticated fraud. As synthetic fraud increases in prevalence, it leads to the rapid spread of misinformation, as recently witnessed with the dissemination of fake images of an explosion at the Pentagon. Sumsub acknowledges that AI advancements provide more tools for fraudsters and is actively working towards detecting a wide range of AI-generated fraud beyond deepfakes.

Conclusion: Towards a Safer Digital Landscape

The rise of deepfake technology presents significant challenges for businesses and individuals alike. As AI technologies continue to develop, it is crucial to have robust mechanisms in place to detect and combat synthetic fraud. Sumsub’s launch of enhanced deepfake detection technology signifies the company’s commitment to strengthening its fraud prevention solutions. By continuously innovating and staying ahead of the game, Sumsub aims to provide businesses with the tools necessary to maintain secure digital platforms and protect their customers from identity fraud.
