Joseph O’Connor, a 21-year-old hacker from the UK, was recently sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the Twitter hack and other cybercrimes.

In addition to the Twitter hack, O’Connor was found guilty of several other offenses, including using a SIM-swap trick to steal approximately $794,000 in cryptocurrency. A SIM swap is a technique where a criminal convinces a mobile phone provider to issue them a replacement SIM card for someone else’s number, allowing them to receive the victim’s calls and text messages, including any two-factor authentication codes.

Furthermore, O’Connor used a similar trick to take over two celebrity TikTok accounts and threatened the account holders. He stalked and threatened a minor by making false emergency calls to law enforcement, a practice known as swatting. These offenses led to multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit computer intrusions, wire fraud, money laundering, making extortive communications, stalking, and making threatening communications.

The Sentence

O’Connor pleaded guilty to the charges in May 2023 and was sentenced to five years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $794,012.64 in forfeiture. It is currently unclear what will happen if he fails to pay this amount.
