1Password Announces Unlock with Single Sign-On (SSO) Integration for Additional Identity Providers

Enhancing Security Infrastructure and Ease of Access

TORONTO, June 28, 2023 – 1Password, the prominent leader in human-centric security and privacy, has unveiled the availability of Unlock with Single Sign-On (SSO) for additional identity providers. With the introduction of the new generic OpenID Connect (OIDC) configuration for 1Password Business, business customers can now integrate 1Password with identity providers such as Duo, OneLogin, JumpCloud, and Ping Identity. This integration aims to strengthen existing security infrastructure, enforce stronger and auditable security policies, and enable employees to easily access their passwords and sensitive information.

Philosophical Discussion: Prioritizing Security and Ease of Use

1Password operates on the belief that making the secure choice should be the easy choice. While SSO providers protect logins for approved apps specifically added to them, 1Password protects virtually everything else. By allowing integration with additional identity providers and unlocking 1Password with SSO, 1Password ensures that IT teams, employees, and businesses can continue to secure their employees efficiently, irrespective of how they choose to sign in.

Unlock 1Password with Your SSO Identity Provider

1Password has enhanced its security infrastructure to offer secure support for multiple providers simultaneously by building a generic OIDC configuration. This configuration utilizes the same underlying zero-knowledge architecture, encryption, and trusted device model as Unlock with Okta and Azure AD. The following features are now available:

  • Unlock with a Single Click via SSO: Vaults can now be unlocked with a single click through SSO, employing zero-knowledge architecture and end-to-end encryption.
  • Set Fine-Grained Permissions and Customizable Access Controls: Pair 1Password with existing identity and access management (IAM) infrastructure to simplify adoption, enable secure sharing, and strengthen auditing, compliance, and reporting workflows.
  • Easy, Secure Access to Passwords and Sensitive Information: Integration with additional identity providers allows employees to authenticate 1Password without an account password, enabling them to access their vaults with just one click.

Editorial: Streamlining Security for Organizations

The introduction of unlocking 1Password with SSO has proven to be a game-changer for organizations that prioritize both security and user experience. For instance, Inductive Automation’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Jason Waits, praises the capability for eliminating the need to remember a separate password for 1Password. This improvement in the login process has not only made it easier for their employees to access their accounts but has also enhanced security and minimized friction. In this regard, streamlining the login process becomes a win for both the security team and the employees.

Expansion of SSO Integration

This recent announcement follows Unlock with Okta and Azure earlier this year. Effective immediately, 1Password Business customers can unlock 1Password by using identity providers that support the generic OpenID Connect configuration.
