Mobile Devices: An Increasing Target for Cyber Attacks

A recent report by mobile security firm Zimperium has highlighted the growing threats faced by mobile device users. The report found that the average number of unique mobile malware samples grew by 51% in 2022, with an average of 77,000 unique malware samples detected every month. Additionally, a quarter of application samples submitted to public repositories were found to be malicious.

The Rise of Mobile Phishing and Spyware

The report emphasized that businesses and users should be primarily concerned about mobile phishing and spyware, while mobile ransomware is expected to become increasingly concerning in the near future. The reliance on mobile devices for business purposes has increased significantly, with more workers using mobile devices for business than in previous years.

Increasing Attacks on Vulnerabilities in Services

Attackers are targeting users through their mobile devices by exploiting vulnerabilities in services built into applications. This includes mounting SMS phishing attacks and specifically targeting mobile devices through phishing sites. The report states that around 80% of phishing sites are designed to target mobile devices.

Different Levels of Threats for Android and iOS

The Android platform tends to attract more threats compared to iOS. One reason for this is the higher number of vulnerabilities disclosed for the Android operating system, which makes it an attractive target for threat actors. Moreover, Android app development tends to have more mistakes, particularly in how the apps interact with cloud storage instances. Android apps are more likely to access unprotected cloud instances compared to iOS apps.

Mobile Threats and Nation-State Espionage

While both Android and iOS platforms are vulnerable to nation-state espionage spyware, Android faces more general threats from cybercriminals. Android devices are more likely to become infected with malware distributed by cybercriminals. However, the lack of jailbreaking utilities for the latest version of iOS has reduced the number of attacks on this platform.

Types of Mobile Malware

According to Kaspersky’s report, there has been a decrease in mobile malware installers and ransomware, but an increase in banking Trojans. Cybercriminals are continually improving malware functionality and spread vectors, with malware increasingly spreading through legitimate channels such as official marketplaces and popular apps.

Importance of Mobile Device Security

While traditional computing platforms still attract the majority of cybercrime, mobile devices represent a significant and often unaddressed attack surface for enterprises. It is crucial for businesses to implement appropriate security controls and educate end-users about potential threats.
