The Dominance of Malware

The report reveals that malware remains the top online threat affecting consumers, accounting for 58% of all detections during the stated period. This finding is consistent with previous years’ trends, which also identified malware as the leading risk. Malware refers to software specifically designed to disrupt or damage devices.

Phishing, Adware, and Pirated Software

Aside from malware, the report highlights other significant threats to consumers. Phishing attacks, where hackers deceive individuals into disclosing sensitive information, accounted for 24.7% of all detections. Adware, a form of malware that delivers unwanted advertisements, hijacks computer settings, or displays potentially dangerous ads, constituted 8.1% of the total detections. Pirated software, encompassing malware embedded into websites that offer free content like movies and TV shows, represented 3.8% of detections. Lastly, a newer threat called cryptojacking, wherein hackers utilize other people’s devices to mine cryptocurrencies without consent, made up 3.6% of detections.

Focused on the United States

In the United States, the two most popular attack vectors for cybercriminals were malware and phishing, with percentages of 45.3% and 43.6% respectively.
