Artificial Intelligence Phishing vs. Human Social Engineers: A Comparative Analysis
The Impact of AI in Phishing Attacks
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought with it concerns about the potential dangers it poses in various domains, including cybersecurity. In particular, there is growing speculation about the effectiveness and potential damage of AI-generated phishing emails. The Study Design and Results
The study involved 1,600 employees of a healthcare firm, with 800 receiving the AI-generated phishing email and the other 800 receiving the human-generated phishing email. The results showed that while AI was able to produce a phish much faster (within five minutes) compared to human social engineers (who took 16 hours), human social engineering was currently more effective than AI phishing. This was attributed to three major factors: emotional intelligence, personalization, and a more succinct and effective headline. Humans are able to understand and manipulate emotions in ways that AI cannot, allowing them to craft narratives that tug at the heartstrings and sound more realistic.
The Close Call: AI vs. Human Phishing
While human social engineering emerged as the winner in this particular study, the results were closer than expected. The human-generated phishing email achieved a 14% click rate, while the AI-generated phishing email achieved an 11% click rate. Similarly, 59% of the AI emails were reported as suspicious, compared to 52% of the human emails. These numbers suggest that AI-powered phishing is already a significant threat.

One important aspect that should be considered is that AI is still in its infancy, while human social engineering has been honed over decades of experience. The study acknowledged the potential for AI to have been used more efficiently with better prompt engineering. Stephanie Carruthers, IBM’s Chief People Hacker at X-Force Red, emphasized the importance of prompt engineering in achieving optimal results. However, she also noted the limitations of current AI capabilities, highlighting that AI responses were robotic and lacked warmth. This indicates that improvements in AI emotional intelligence and response styles could potentially make AI phishing more persuasive.

Looking ahead, it is crucial to consider how much AI will improve in the coming years. This question has two dimensions: the improvement of publicly available AI and the advancement of criminal AI. While public AI will be limited by compliance guardrails, criminal AI will have no such restrictions and may utilize stolen personal data from both the surface web and the dark web. This raises concerns that AI-powered phishing attacks could become highly personalized and, if combined with improved emotional intelligence, more devastating than current attacks.
