Google I/O announcements on Wednesday show that Google is taking Internet security seriously. They have introduced a number of measures to ensure user privacy and security. Google is committed to moving beyond passreplaces and looks to eliminate them entirely. Last week, they enabled passkey sign-on for Google Accounts which helps users access their account without the need for traditional passwords. At Google I/O, Google has once again reinforced their commitment to passwordless.
### Safe Browsing API
Google also launched a new version of its Safe Browsing API that helps check for dangerous sites and files and identifies them faster than ever before. This measure is a crucial step forward in protecting users from malware and phishing.
### Dark Web Monitoring
In a few weeks, Gmail users will be able to scan the dark web for their Gmail addresses. This feature would provide guidance to users about the actions they should take if their email address is identified on the dark web. Google is currently blocking more than 99.9% of spam, phishing and malware before they can infect Gmail users. The dark web monitoring feature would provide a critical layer of protection for Gmail users.
### Spam Filtering for Google Drive
Google is also providing spam filtering for Google Drive. This feature would make it easier for users to identify potential spam and unwanted files, ensuring a safe user experience. Additionally, “Drive will automatically classify content into the spam view, similar to how Gmail does today, preventing users from ever having to notice dangerous or unwanted files,” said Jen Fitzpatrick, Senior Vice President of Core Systems & Experiences at Google.
### Fighting Child Sexual Abuse Material
Google is expanding an API used by publishers like Facebook and Yobo to classify and review potential child sexual abuse material in video. This is a critical step forward in the fight to eliminate child sexual abuse material on the internet.
### About This Image Tool
Finally, Google is introducing the “About This Image” tool to help users evaluate the reliability of visual content online. This measure would help prevent misinformation by providing context about an image and details such as its initial index date and where else it has been seen.
Overall, Google‘s latest efforts to protect user privacy and security is a critical step forward. This move demonstrates Google‘s commitment to ensuring a safe and secure internet experience for its users. As internet risks continue to evolve, it is crucial that tech companies such as Google continue to prioritize these efforts.
