Ransomware Attacks on the Rise

Author: Nate Nelson

Date: August 26, 2022

Ransomware attacks have seen a resurgence in recent months, with Lockbit emerging as the most prolific ransomware group this summer, followed by two offshoots of the Conti group. According to data released by NCC Group, old ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) groups are leading this increase in attacks.

The Dominance of Lockbit

The data collected by NCC Group, through active monitoring of leak sites and scraping victim details, reveals that Lockbit was responsible for 62 attacks in July, making it the most threatening ransomware group during that period. This number represents a ten-point increase from the previous month and more than the combined attacks of the second and third most prolific groups.

The second and third most prolific groups are Hiveleaks, with 27 attacks, and BlackBasta, with 24 attacks. Both groups have experienced significant rises since June, with Hiveleaks witnessing a 440 percent increase and BlackBasta seeing a 50 percent rise in attacks. The rise of these groups may be interconnected with the resurgence in ransomware attacks.

Reasons for the Resurgence

In July, NCC Group recorded 198 successful ransomware campaigns, indicating a 47 percent increase from the previous month. However, these figures still fall short of the high-water mark recorded in March and April when there were nearly 300 ransomware campaigns.

The authors of the report suggest that the resurgence may be attributed to the structural changes within the cybercriminal landscape. In May, the United States government intensified its efforts against Russian cybercrime by offering up to $15 million for valuable information about the Conti group, which was then the leading ransomware gang. This pressure likely led to structural changes within the group, resulting in the emergence of Hiveleaks and BlackBasta as affiliated and replacement strains of Conti respectively.

With the split of Conti into two distinct entities, the authors predict further increases in ransomware attacks as we move into August.

Analysis: Internet Security and the Fight Against Ransomware

The rise of ransomware attacks, as evidenced by the proliferation of Lockbit and its associated groups, highlights the persistent threat posed by cybercriminals. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of robust internet security measures and continuous vigilance to combat these threats.

Internet Security: A Collective Responsibility

Ransomware attacks are not only a concern for large organizations but also for individuals and small businesses. The interconnected nature of the internet means that no one is fully immune from these attacks. Therefore, it is crucial for all stakeholders, including individuals, businesses, and governments, to prioritize internet security.

This collective responsibility requires individuals and businesses to implement strong security practices, such as regularly updating software, using secure passwords, and educating themselves about potential threats. Governments, on the other hand, should invest in cybersecurity infrastructure and collaborate with international partners to tackle the global nature of cybercrime.

The Role of Regulation and Enforcement

The fight against ransomware attacks also necessitates a comprehensive legal and regulatory framework that curbs the activities of cybercriminals. Governments must enact legislation that not only punishes those who engage in ransomware attacks but also imposes strict penalties on individuals and organizations that provide support to these criminal networks, such as ransomware-as-a-service platforms.

Additionally, law enforcement agencies must be adequately equipped, trained, and funded to investigate and apprehend cybercriminals. International cooperation and information sharing are vital in identifying and dismantling ransomware networks that often operate across borders.

Editorial: Urgent Need for Cybersecurity Investment

The resurgence of ransomware attacks, despite increased international efforts to combat cybercrime, underscores the urgency for continuous investment in cybersecurity. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, so do the tactics and sophistication of cybercriminals.

Without adequate cybersecurity measures, individuals, businesses, and governments are left vulnerable to ransomware attacks, which can cause significant financial and reputational damage. The costs associated with recovering from such attacks far outweigh the investments required to prevent them.

The Case for Proactive Cybersecurity

Traditional reactive approaches to cybersecurity, such as relying solely on antivirus software and incident response plans, are no longer sufficient in combating the evolving threat of ransomware. Instead, organizations must adopt proactive cybersecurity strategies that include continuous monitoring, threat intelligence, and regular vulnerability assessments.

Investments in cybersecurity must not be viewed as a mere expense but rather as a critical aspect of doing business in the digital era. By proactively addressing vulnerabilities and implementing robust security measures, organizations can build a resilient defense against ransomware attacks.

Conclusion: Protecting the Digital Future

As ransomware attacks continue to rise, it is imperative that individuals, businesses, and governments prioritize internet security and invest in comprehensive cybersecurity measures. Collaboration, regulation, and enforcement are crucial components in combating cybercrime, but proactive approaches must also be embraced to stay ahead of evolving threats.

Protecting the digital future requires the collective effort of all stakeholders, as the societal and economic costs of ransomware attacks are far too high to be ignored. By working together, we can create a safer digital environment that ensures the security and prosperity of individuals, businesses, and nations alike.
